The effects of the Trump administration on wage theft

A recent article in The American Prospect examines the effects that the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant rhetoric is having on the immigrant workforce, as those that fall victim to wage theft and other violations of federal employment law are often scared to take legal action against employers over the fear of arrest or deportation.

Laura Huizar of the National Employment Law Project told The American Prospect that the administration’s tough stance on immigration and increase in raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement has “made immigrant communities obviously fearful in a new way,” going on to state that “this is going to prevent a lot of people from filing wage complaints that they otherwise would have.”

Although wage theft has always been an issue among the immigrant workforce, activists and attorneys see the problem quickly worsening in the current political climate and fear that it will only become increasingly widespread as Trump’s aggressive anti-immigration agenda widens.
